So in the course of 10 plus years in business I've learned a few things. One in particular is how to value people. Why is that significant to the topic at hand? Because its not a natural human inclination and we all must be taught. Furthermore it's 1000% relevant in business. I think too often we separate business from human flourishing. In fact they go hand in hand. We see this in books like "The ecology of commerce" by Paul Hawkin because it practically makes sense. We find principles of human flourishing applied also because it works.
When you value people you aren't looking for a standard necessarily but how each piece fits. Now the piece may not work for you but it will always have value. In finding solutions for my business I always tried to keep that and apply it. So if I had a piece of information that didn't readily fit or someone asking me for work that I had no reason to take onto my team I still looked for a value factor in them.Â
I speak generally because problems NEVER have an eternal key solution. Its the principles that will guide you through your business solutions. This is what allowed me to think three steps ahead and grasp information and events to see how they connect. I'll give you an example of what I mean.
Lets say you are a restaurant owner and you need new customers. Let say you hire a server but you hire an artist. Thats one level. But let lets say you hire an artist/model with 10k followers on instagram. Thats two levels. Lets say you hired an artist looking to test out thier user development stills and they wanted to experiment on your website. You leveled up again by doing that.Â
This can also work very very simply by who you meet. I've been approached by people who've asked me to refer them multi million dollar accounts. I was not related in any way to their industry but they asked. They saw human value in me just like I mentioned. I had the contacts. Additionally I've had people completely reject me but in keeping my principles kept their contact. Later down the line they still were willing to help me figure out some of the biggest business transactions of my career. Its principles not magic keys to fit all of your situations.
You see each person we encounter has eternal value. That's my world view and I strive to see that in every person I meet even if they don't appear to add value to my business. Adding to the universal currency of human flourishing isn't about your business. Its what we do as humans. Business is telling each owner a great deal about self. That should matter. I believe when we apply this principle we will not only will we have a good business but a thriving society. Be well and thanks for reading.
